I’ve been trying to pinpoint when I started painting with an underpainting. Can’t say exactly, but I was using this approach when I was doing children’s picture books, more than 20 years ago. So it’s been a while! If this is new to you, this is an Imprimatura-Bistre - the “first layer” of paint that I believe is critical if you want luminosity in your paintings… and this is the way I start all my daytime landscape paintings.
