BTS didn’t just skip an awards show, they named the actual question the Grammys have been dodging for over a decade: Does this institution want to sort music by identity–or does it want to trust identity not to determine the outcome in the categories that matter most? It cannot keep doing both and expect artists to stop noticing the difference.
